Quand et comment porter les boutons de manchette

Les boutons de manchette sont apparus au XVIIème siècle. Remplaçant les rubans qui fermaient les poignets, ils restent cantonnés aux tenues de cérémonie et autres habits du soir, et sont fixés au niveau de la boutonnière de la manche des chemises ayant des poignets doubles et repliés, dits mousquetaires, ou mixtes.

Ils se décomposent en 3 parties :

- La face visible : c’est la face avant du bouton de manchette, souvent ornée, gravée, incrustée
d’une pierre ou autre joli matériau.

- La tige : est la partie qui passe à travers les ouvertures de la chemise et qui est attachée au bouton.

- Le bouton : est la partie inférieure du bouton de manchette, qui tourne à 90 degrés pour maintenir le bijou en place et l’empêcher de sortir des deux ouvertures situées sur les manchettes.

Certains types de boutons de manchette, comme les boutons à chainette, à fixation boule ou en soie ne possèdent pas de bouton ou de tige dure. Ceux-ci sont alors remplacés par une chaîne, une tige incurvée ou un autre type de mécanisme permettant de les maintenir en place. En outre, certains modèles sont réversibles et équipés de deux faces identiques et peuvent donc être portés dans un sens ou dans l’autre.

Le bouton de manchette a la particularité d’être l’un des seuls bijoux inhérents au vestiaire masculin. Le choix du modèle révèle quelque chose de votre personnalité : le choisir le plus sobre possible permet d’éviter les fautes de gout et d’envoyer le mauvais message. En cas de doute, privilégiez un modèle à boule en tissu ou métal.
